Newlin’s unique series of informal happy hours feature a local brewery, winery, and/or distillery each month! Visitors can enjoy beverages while chatting with the Newlin Grist Mill staff about what’s going on in the park. The happy hours take place on select Thursday evenings at the Log Cabin on site.

2023 Happy Hours:

  • April 13 – Penns Woods Winery
  • May 18 – Sterling Pig Brewery & Liquid Alchemy Beverages
  • June 8 – Penns Woods Winery
  • September 14 – Penns Woods Winery & Liquid Alchemy Beverages
  • October 12 – TBA

6-7:30pm. Samples are free, additional drinks may be purchased. Must be 21 or older to attend. No reservations necessary.

History at Work: “Early German-American Cookery” with Dr. Clarissa F. Dillon

History at Work: "Early German-American Cookery" with Dr. Clarissa F. Dillon @ Newlin Grist Mill

Get a closer look at trades of the eighteenth century in Newlin’s “History at Work” series. Members of Newlin Grist Mill’s staff, volunteers, and outside artisans will demonstrate their crafts and talk with visitors about how different trades and skills were integral to life in colonial Pennsylvania and to the operation of Newlin Grist Mill.

This year, we’re focusing on foodways and coordinating the demonstrations with our Newlin Series talks:

  • June 10th – Early German-American cookery with Dr. Clarissa F. Dillon (10am-3pm)
  • August 26th – 18th-century mushroom dishes with Laura Adie & Tony Shahan
  • September 23rd – Receipts from American Cookery with Pamela Cooley (10am-2pm)
  • October 28th – 18th-century Dairying with Laura Adie (10am-3pm)

Demonstrations take place in the Trimble House Kitchen. Free and open to the public of all ages.

Habitat Stewards

Habitat Stewards @ Newlin Grist Mill

Help us make our park a better place for wildlife and people! The Habitat Stewards group meets once a month to work on outdoor tasks related habitat restoration and species conservation. Projects vary by month but include things like invasive plant removal, tree planting, garden maintenance, trail cleanup, and outdoor classroom care.

In 2023, the Habitat Stewards are meeting on the following dates from 1pm to 3pm:

Join us onsite in the Log Cabin as we explore historic foodways in the “Mid-Atlantic Melting Pot” with this season’s slate of presentations. We’re also coordinating this year with our free “History at Work” programs to feature a related hearth cooking demonstration in the Trimble House Kitchen during the day of each talk.

Dr. William Woys Weaver is an internationally known food historian and author who has studied and written extensively about the German influence on Pennsylvania foodways. In this presentation, he will cover the complex cultural and culinary themes that have evolved into a distinctive regional food identity.

Race for the Watershed: 5K & Duck Race

Race for the Watershed: 5K & Duck Race @ Newlin Grist Mill

Help support healthy waterways in our community!

Held in partnership with Concord Township, this new event will be a fundraiser to help raise money to restore and preserve the watershed in the park. Funds raised will go toward the purchase and installation of water quality monitoring equipment along the stream that runs through Newlin Grist Mill.

The day will kick off with a 5K race on the trails, followed by duck races in the creek. In addition, there will be food vendors and activities throughout the day!

5K: $35 per runner entry fee (includes a race t-shirt) – sign up via https://runsignup.com/Race/PA/GlenMills/RacefortheWatershed

Bird Walk

Newlin Grist Mill and Wild Birds Unlimited (Glen Mills) have teamed up to explore the wonderful world of bird life!

Join us for monthly naturalist-led walks through the 160-acre park at Newlin Grist Mill. We will meet year-round residents, visit exciting migrants, and learn the basics of bird identification and biology.

Families and beginners are welcome for these free bird walks! A limited number of binoculars are available for use, but participants are encouraged to bring their own if they have them. Participants should meet in front of the Visitor Center.

Public Archaeology

Public Archaeology @ Newlin Grist Mill

The Archaeology Program seeks to evaluate archaeological resources and explore research questions concerning the development of the Newlin Grist Mill historic site while enhancing public knowledge and providing opportunities for the public to participate in the archaeological process.

Excavations are conducted under the leadership of resident archaeologist Keith Doms with assistance from members of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology and volunteers from the community. Individuals and groups throughout the region volunteer one Saturday per month assisting with excavations and artifact cleaning. The project is bringing to light new evidence that reshapes earlier perceptions.
