Earth Month @ Newlin Grist Mill

Help celebrate nature and protect the environment with our Earth Month volunteer event. Each year, we bring together diverse volunteers from the community, including individuals, families, scout troops, and youth groups, to work on projects that improve habitat for wildlife, protect important natural resources, and preserve the park’s plant and animal communities. Past projects have included planting trees, installing bird boxes, and stream cleanups.

We will meet to plant trees, remove invasive plant species, repair trails, and improve habitat for wetland wildlife on Saturday, April 13th and Saturday, April 27th. Groups will be scheduled for 3 hour shifts (9am-12pm and 1-4pm).

Register for a shift by emailing jshahan@newlingristmill.org.

Race for the Watershed: 5K Trail Run & Duck Race @ Newlin Grist Mill

9am (5K); 10:30am (Duck Races); 1pm (Water System Grand Reopening)

Help support healthy waterways in our community!

Held in partnership with Concord Township, this event is a fundraiser to help raise money to restore and preserve the watershed in the park. Funds raised will go toward the purchase of equipment to conduct snapshot surveys of Chester Creek, enabling NGM to test multiple locations along the creek simultaneously. The Chester creek is listed as impaired by the Pennsylvania DEP, and this snapshot study is an important first step in identifying what the issues are (identification of pollutants, for example) so we can then create a plan to address them on a county-wide level. When water quality is low, it has a detrimental impact on human health and safety, as well as the plants and animals that survive and thrive both in and near our waterways. Currently, very little local level data is available for the township’s smaller waterways, and conducting these snapshot surveys will help inform decisions on ways to improve water quality for Delaware County.

The day will kick off at 9am with a 5K race on the trails, followed by duck races in the creek at 10:30am and a grand reopening celebration of the water system at 1pm. Not a runner? Don’t worry, there will be plenty to see and discover with kids games, vendors, exhibitors, music, and food trucks.

5K: $35 per runner entry fee. $40 day of. Register at https://runsignup.com/Race/PA/GlenMills/RacefortheWatershed Duck Race: $20 per duck or $50 for 3 ducks. Purchase ducks at https://newlingristmill.org/race-for-the-watershed/
