Whether you’re looking to lend a hand for a day or find a long-term volunteer role, there are many ways to get involved at Newlin Grist Mill. No matter what your experience or skill level, we’ll help you find an opportunity that fits and fulfills your interests.
Volunteer Opportunities — No Experience Required
General Volunteers
Not sure where to start? That’s okay! We’d be happy to meet with you, learn about your skills and interests, and find a way for you to help make Newlin an even better place.
Opportunities may include:
- Helping with special events
- Assisting with Seasonal projects
- Supporting the historic site and nature preserve in a variety of ways
Natural Resource Management
Enjoy the outdoors and care for Newlin’s 160-acre preserve. By maintaining trails, planting trees and restoring habitat, our volunteers play an important role in keeping the preserve healthy, beautiful, and welcoming.
Opportunities may include:
- Tree planting
- Gardening
- Trail maintenance
- Habitat restoration
- Removing invasive species
- Erosion-control projects
Buildings & Grounds
It takes a lot of work to care for a historic site! Help us maintain Newlin’s historic buildings and keep the surrounding grounds looking their best.
Opportunities may include:
- Maintaining landscape areas
- Mowing and groundskeeping
- Painting
- Cleanup projects
- Assisting with the upkeep and preservation of Newlin’s historic buildings
Specialized Volunteer Opportunities
Some specialized training, skills, or a regular time commitment may be required.
Archaeology
Help uncover Newlin’s buried history, work alongside our archaeology team on excavations, help clean and catalog artifacts, or support special archaeology programs and events.
Volunteers who wish to participate long-term are required to complete an 8-hour training program before getting started.
Archives & Collections
Help preserve Newlin’s history by working hands-on with our archives and collections. Volunteers assist with organizing, cataloging, researching, and caring for materials that tell the story of Newlin and the surrounding community.
This role is best suited for detail-oriented history lovers who can commit to a regular schedule of at least a few hours, twice a month.
Visitor Services
Do you like talking to folks about Newlin’s many wonderful attributes? Then Visitor Services may be for you. Greet visitors, answer questions, share information about the park and upcoming programs, assist in the Visitor Center, and support staff with light office and clerical projects.
This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys meeting people, staying organized, and helping visitors feel at home at Newlin.
Education & Interpretation
Do you have a passion for history, nature, or traditional crafts? Help us bring Newlin’s stories to life!
Volunteers can support educational programs, demonstrations, tours, and special events focused on topics such as blacksmithing, woodworking, milling, natural history, and other historic trades.
You don’t need to be an expert to get involved. Volunteers interested in leading demonstrations or interpreting specialized subjects will receive training and may need to demonstrate an appropriate level of knowledge or proficiency.
